What your spelling checker won't tell you....

The world would be a happier place if
spelling and grammar programs did their jobs.
Since they don't, they keep us busy in ours.

The problem with these programs is that they have
no professional judgment or common sense.

Take the fellow who took to his computer to protest the
"decline in social morays"
He wasn't talking about eel populations at all,
but his spelling checker couldn't tell the difference.
As a result, his complaint was immortalized in the local newspaper.

Then there was this gem,
encountered at a national TV network's web site:
"Storm reeks havoc on traffic"
That one probably left its author in a bad odor indeed.

Even if you're comfortable with nouns like mores and verbs like wreak,
you're susceptible to typing glitches that no program can catch:

We two... We too... We to... Wee two...
Any of those are fine by your spelling checker.
Only another human can know which one you meant.

Or say you want to describe someone (like us) who reads carefully.
Does he pore over his words, or pour over them?
Here again, your computer can't help you.
We can.
